Cable connection can be useful in two cases: when your TV does not have a built-in (or external) Wi-Fi module, and when you do not have a Wi-Fi router (or just can't connect to a wireless network).
We will consider two connection methods:
- Connect directly using a LAN cable that you most likely have at home (cable that the provider laid).
- And connecting through a router.
In both cases, there is nothing difficult.
I will show on the example of the LG 32LN575U TV.
Connecting through a router
For example, you have a router, but your TV does not have Wi-Fi. We can simply lay a network cable from the router to the TV.
Our router must be connected to the Internet and configured.
Also, we need a network cable. A small cable comes with a router, or with a TV. But, if you need a longer cable, then you can make it yourself, as written here, or go to some computer store and ask to crimp the cable to the desired length.
We connect one end of the cable to the router, to the yellow connector (I apologize for the quality of the photo).
On the TV, we connect the second end of the cable to the network connector (RJ-45). Better to have the TV on.
It should turn out something like this:
If everything is fine, then immediately after connecting the cable, a window should appear on the TV with a message stating that connected to a wired network(it disappears quickly).
Everything, the Internet on the TV is already working! You can enjoy all the features of Smart TV.
Direct connection, network cable from the provider
Here, almost everything is the same as in the previous method. If your provider uses connection technology “Dynamic IP” (you can check with support), then just connect the cable to the TV and everything works.
But if technology PPPoE, but here it is a bit more complicated. For example, on my LG 32LN575U there is no way to set up such a connection. There is already only one option, install a router and raise the connection on it. And already with a cable, or via Wi-Fi, connect the TV.
But, as far as I know, for example, some Samsung TVs can raise a PPPoE connection. See the specifications, check with the manufacturer.
Set a static IP and DNS on the TV

A little over twenty years ago, only a more powerful antenna could be connected to a TV. After that, a LAN port appeared on the case for organizing a cable network.
Even later - Wi-Fi, first as a separate device (adapter), and then as a built-in module. Gradually, TVs "overgrown" with multimedia capabilities: players, instant messengers, clients for YouTube. And today, Smart TV is absolutely calmly perceived, which turned the TV into a computer entertainment center. Smart TV combines hardware components (the same Wi-Fi module) and a software environment, the latter being based on Linux or Android with all the ensuing consequences in the form of installing applications from Google Play.
How to take full advantage of these benefits, we will describe in detail below. We hope our tips will help you connect your TV to the Internet the first time.
What you need to connect your TV to the Internet
You have to make the TV part of the local network - which means that you will need data to enter it. First, it is the name that is used for identification. Two options are possible here: either you named the network when you first connected to the Internet, or you use the standard one that was automatically generated. Usually the latter contains the name of the router or the name of the provider, although other options are possible. Secondly, this is a password for accessing the network - it can be invented by you, the provider, or simply used by default (turn the router over and see the cherished numbers). If you happen to be unsure of one or both of the settings, contact your ISP.
From the equipment you will need a router, it is also a router. Most likely, it is there, configured and you actively use the Internet, which it distributes to various devices: PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets. Now a TV will be added to them. The router in this case will be an intermediary between it and the provider's network. It's good that it does not need complex settings - it is enough that the DHCP server is activated in the section with LAN network parameters.
Connecting the TV to the Internet via cable
To make connections, stock up on a network patch cord. It is freely sold in stores selling computer accessories, as well as in service shops. This cable will connect the router and the TV. In both cases, LAN ports are used, so make sure that at least such a free port is on the router. Choose the length of the cable in order to hide it from prying eyes - a room entangled with wires does not look very neat. Alternatively, you can use a pair of PowerLine adapters that will allow you to organize a local network using existing wiring. True, for this, it is desirable to have one free socket next to the adapter and the TV.
When the physical connection is established, you can proceed to the software configuration. The procedure for different TV manufacturers varies slightly, but in general everything looks about the same.
- Turn on the TV and go to the section with global settings. There is usually a Settings button on the remote for this purpose;
- Go to the section called "Network" and open the item "Network settings".
- Click the "Start" (or "Start") button to launch the connection wizard.
- Select "Cable" ("Cable connection") from the proposed list and confirm your choice. When the connection is established, a corresponding message will appear on the screen.
- Test the Internet by opening the built-in browser or the YouTube client.
Connecting the TV to the Internet via a wireless network (Wi— fi)
Do not want to overload the interior with extra wires - your right. In this case, we propose to organize a connection via a radio channel. Most likely, a router working at home can distribute the Internet over a Wi-Fi network - then make sure that the corresponding technology is supported by the TV too.
If there is no built-in module, this is not a reason to be upset: there are external adapters on sale. They are inexpensive - an average of 600-1000 rubles - and are produced by well-known manufacturers such as TP-Link, Asus, Tenda and others.
To set up a wireless connection, follow steps 1 to 3 above. Next, select "Wireless" in the proposed list and confirm the choice. If the Wi-Fi network is accessible with a password (we recommend setting one if it is not), enter it and complete the connection. The system will ask you to enter IP and DNS - ignore, leaving the default options. Then test the new connection using the built-in browser or other service that requires the Internet.
If you have a slow Internet connection and a lot of "consumers", 4K and Full HD video will play on your TV with a delay. To prevent this from happening, pause playback for a few minutes or select a lower resolution (720p or 360p).
TV set-top box - an alternative for older TV models
The Smart TV set-top box is the only option to “upgrade” an old TV that does not have its own Wi-Fi module. As a software basis, such set-top boxes use the Android OS, which is well known to owners of smartphones and tablets. A big plus of this solution is that this operating system allows you to install any application from Google Play. However, the set-top box also has its own set of services, including channels (up to several hundred!), media players, online cinemas, instant messengers, access to IPTV and much more. For example, in the set-top box Interactive TV 2.0 + Wi-Fi from OnLime, more than 2000 films and series, 120 channels and many other interesting features are available. .
An Android set-top box connects to a TV in one of three ways: an HDMI cable, an AV cable (RCA tulips), or an HDMI converter adapter. Once the wired connection is established, change the source on the TV using the Input or Source buttons on the remote control. By the way, through an HDMI cable you will get the best image quality, which cannot be said about the AV cable that is used to connect older TVs.
If everything went well, the TV will “see” the prefix and the only thing left is to set up an Internet connection. As usual, two methods are available: via an Ethernet cable that will network the set-top box and router, or via Wi-Fi. In the first case, a physical connection is enough, in the second, the system will require you to enter a password for accessing the wireless network. After that, proceed to personalize the device - set the language, current time and date, install applications from Google Play.
Other ways to connect your TV to the Internet
Many modern routers support WPS technology. Noticed this designation on your device? Congratulations - it means that the setup will take just a couple of minutes. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a technology that makes it easy to connect devices to a wireless network. This is convenient, because now you do not need to enter a password for the network and understand the settings section.
Important! In some routers, the same button is responsible for activating WPS and the RESET function. Holding it for 5 seconds or more will reset the settings to factory settings!
To enable the WPS function, hold down the corresponding button for 1-2 seconds. If the operation is successful, an additional indicator will flash on the router. After that, activate the WPS mode on the second device - the TV. And then there are options.
First. The TV does not have a Wi-Fi module and you are using an appropriate adapter. If it also has a WPS button, just press it and the TV will connect to your home network in a few seconds.
Second. If the Wi-Fi module is built into the TV, select the WPS item in the network settings wizard.
If the router does not have a WPS button, there is a high probability that the technology is still supported by the device. In this case, to activate it, perform a small wireless network setup in the router itself. To do this, you will need a PIN code from the label of the router, glued on the bottom. You can learn more about activating WPS in the instructions for the router - the settings menu interface differs from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Smart TVs offer a virtual keyboard for entering text, but using it is not very convenient. Remote control is familiar, but limited in scope. We offer two alternative options that will make browsing the Internet from your TV more enjoyable.
Smartphone applications. They are widely represented in the Google Play and App Store content stores. They are easy to find in the relevant sections or by such keywords: Smart TV, Remote, Control. Often, brands of well-known TV manufacturers such as Samsung and LG appear in the names. The app is handy because it allows you to easily customize screen content, switch between multiple content sources, and even simply navigate using the cursor, just like you would use a touchpad on a laptop.
Accessories with a gyroscope. It can be both remotes with extended functionality, and wireless mice in tandem with a keyboard. Consoles and mice with gyroscopes are usually called air guns and air mice, respectively. In them, the cursor is controlled by moving the device in space. Light movements up, down and to the sides are enough - the cursor will accurately repeat the movements of the user's hand.

Connecting to a wireless network using an LG TV as an example
Since this manufacturer of equipment is one of the most popular, many will connect TVs of this particular company to a wireless network. Although the setup process is similar on most devices and other brands.
To get started, remember that when you first turn on most models offer to connect to the Internet. If you do not ignore this suggestion, then later you will not have to specifically deal with the device settings.
So, enter the menu using a certain button on the remote control. Now click Network, Network connection and then - Configure. You will see a list from which you need to select one item.
Please note that if necessary, you can independently set any of the parameters of such a network by going to manual settings. Most often, this will have to be done when connecting with a hidden SSID, when you need to specify a static IP, or when using WPS technology.
After completing the described steps and entering the correct password, you will see a message on the TV screen that the wireless network has been successfully set up. Now click Done and start surfing.
If during the action you are prompted to enter IP and DNS, it is enough to leave the default values. This means that these parameters will be inserted automatically.
After connecting the TV to the Internet, all LG Smart TV functions will be available. And on the monitor screen you will see an icon indicating a successful connection to the Internet.
Connecting to a wireless network using a Samsung TV as an example
As in the first case, you will need a TV with Internet access that supports Smart TV. Naturally, you need a router and a connection to a wireless network. Please note that the settings of the built-in or external adapter are absolutely identical.
So, go along the path Menu - Network - Network settings - Wireless network (general). Here you will have access to a list of all networks, from which simply select the one you need and click on the Next button.
If your wireless network is password protected, a window will automatically open to enter letters and numbers using the alphabet on the screen. To control the cursor, use the arrows on the remote control.
Although, if desired, ordinary computer mice or even keyboards are easily connected to the TV. Next, you will see how the connection to the Internet occurs directly.
In case of unsuccessful connection attempts, enter the settings and confirm automatic IP detection. But if your router does not support the DCHP server function or the Wi-Fi wireless network is built using manual assignment of IP addresses, you will have to manually configure it.
Connecting with WPS, One Foot Connection, or Plug & Access
These technologies are only supported by some hardware models, check availability of these features before purchasing. For example, WPS is a fully automatic setting for connecting a TV to the Internet. All that is required in this case is to go to the TV menu and simultaneously hold down the button on the router for 10-20 seconds.
One Foot Connection allows you to connect routers and TVs of the same company - Samsung. To do this, you need to make only one touch - turn on the function in the TV menu. Unfortunately, no other brand offers such an easy way to connect to a wireless network.
It will also be quite quick to set up an Internet connection when you use Plug & Access technology. Everything is extremely simple here: you need a blank flash drive, which you alternately insert into the USB connector of the router and your TV. The connection to the WiFi network will be completed within a few seconds.
After a successful internet connection, log into Smart Hub to access entertainment information, apps, and other useful features. There is also a built-in browser with which you can easily view web pages and even videos from YouTube.
Solving possible connection problems
If you are unable to connect the TV to the Internet, use one of the three possible work algorithms.
- Try turning the TV off and on again, often this simple action is enough to fix the problem.
- Reset your Smart Hub. To do this, follow the path Smart Hub - Tools - Reset settings and enter the pin code. After you agree to the terms of the license agreement and the privacy policy, the application will automatically restart.
- Only if there is no result after completing the first two points, you can try updating the software installed on your TV. You will need to go along the path Menu - Support - Software Update - Over the network. If there is no connection to the network, you can use a USB flash drive, on which the latest firmware version for your TV model will be pre-written.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated in connecting a TV to a Wi-Fi wireless network. All you need is a little of your desire and time. If you follow all the steps carefully, then within a few seconds after the start of the setup, you will be able to enjoy browsing the Internet on a large and high-quality TV screen.
If you look now at the TVs that are on the market, then most of them support the Smart TV function. LG has webOS, Samsung has its own Smart system, Philips and Sony work on Android TV. There are of course other manufacturers, but they are less popular. What I mean is that Smart TVs themselves are primarily an additional source of income for manufacturers (due to the sale of additional accessories) and a good marketing move.
For the user, too, there are cool chips. You can go online, watch videos on YouTube, read the news, watch the weather, etc. But here you still need to calculate what is more profitable: buy a TV without Smart TV and a set-top box for it, or overpay for Smart functions. Since a regular Android box can make your TV more SMART than the built-in system. But today is not about that.
Of all the TVs that have Smart TV features, many models come without a built-in Wi-Fi receiver. True, in 2017, almost all models already have a built-in receiver. And if you don’t connect the Internet to the TV, then all these Smart functions in it are simply useless. Yes, all models definitely have a LAN port that allows you to connect the Internet via cable. But agree, it is very inconvenient. You need to run a network cable from the router to the TV.
And all these Smart TVs that do not have a Wi-Fi module are another cunning plan of manufacturers. After all, you could insert this wireless module, and make the TV a couple of dollars more expensive. What for? If we can then sell branded Wi-Fi adapters for 100 dollars 🙂 Yes, even now these branded Wi-Fi adapters for Samsung, LG, Philips TVs are very difficult to find. They are simply not for sale. And there are TVs, and their users want to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
If you have a Smart TV TV without built-in Wi-Fi, and you want to connect it to the Internet via a wireless network, then there are the following options:
- First, I advise you to look at the characteristics of your TV on the official website. Perhaps your TV still has Wi-Fi, and it can be connected to a wireless network. It may come in handy:, and a separate one. If there is no built-in receiver, then you can search and buy a branded, external USB adapter.
- The second way is to buy a regular Wi-Fi adapter from D-Link, TP-Link, etc., and its firmware to work with a TV. To be honest, I can’t even imagine how all this is stitched and works there, but I saw such information on the Internet. This is a way for those who are not looking for easy ways.
- Well, the third option, which I will discuss in more detail later in the article, is to buy a regular, inexpensive Wi-Fi router or repeater and configure it as an adapter for a TV without Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi adapter from a router for Smart TV TV without built-in Wi-Fi module
Everything is very simple. Almost all modern routers can operate in different modes: amplifier (repeater), access point, adapter, wireless bridge. I wrote more about this in the article:. This scheme works like this:
- We buy a router. Perhaps you have some old one. Maybe even an inexpensive one. Totolink and Netis have good and budget options. Other manufacturers will do as well.
- Set it up in adapter mode. If there is such a mode, then the router will receive Internet from your main Wi-Fi network and transmit it to the TV via a network cable. The bridge mode, or network amplifier, is also suitable. True, in this case, the router will further strengthen your wireless network.
- We connect our Smart TV TV with a router via a network cable.
- The Internet on the TV works via Wi-Fi.

As an adapter, you can also use a regular one, which has at least one LAN port. And it is available on almost all models.
What is the result: a router or repeater can be bought in almost every store. Compared to branded Wi-Fi receivers for LG, Samsung TVs, etc. And it will turn out cheaper (True, depending on which router you choose), since the price of original adapters is very high.

Almost all modern TVs have functionality that allows them to access the Internet. It remains only to connect and configure it. There are two ways to connect your TV to the Internet:
1 With network cable;
2 Using a Wi-Fi wireless connection.
Connecting a cable to a TV is not as easy as it might seem at first glance, because you need to understand where this cable comes from, where one of its ends is connected. And here there are two options:
1 The network cable is connected to the router;
2 The network cable comes from the entrance (provider's cable).
Let's analyze each of the options in more detail.
Connecting the TV to the Internet with an ISP network cable.
This method does not require any additional devices and at first it may seem that everything is simple, but this is not entirely true. The thing is that providers use various connection technologies, such as PPPoE, L2TP, Dynamic IP, Static IP. It is on what technology your provider uses that the settings that need to be made on the TV in order for the Internet to work there depend. You can find out what technology your provider uses by looking at the contract with the provider or by calling technical support. Next, I propose to disassemble each of the connection technologies:
Dynamic IP. If your ISP uses Dynamic IP, you need a minimum of effort:
1 Connect the network cable of the provider to the TV;
2 Make sure your TV is set to Automatic search for network settings.
For example, I will describe how to do this on LG TVs with webOS.
Press the "Settings" button on the normal remote control.
If you have a remote magic, press the "Input" button.
Select the gear icon.
Then select "Network" - "Wired Ethernet Connection". There you should see the inscription "Connected to the Internet", if so, then congratulations, you have set up the Internet on your TV.
If you have the message " No connection to the Internet via Ethernet", select this connection and make sure that automatic network settings are set there.
Static IP. With this connection method, you need to find out your network settings from the contract with the provider and register them in the TV settings. We do everything step by step:
1 Connect the provider's network cable to the TV's LAN port.
2 Go to the TV settings and write down the network settings of the provider.
For example, on LG TVs, press the "Settings" button, select from the menu - "Network" - "Wired Ethernet Connection",
Uncheck "Automatically" and write down the IP address, mask, gateway, DNS issued by the provider.
PPPoE, L2TP. Unfortunately, very few TVs allow you to set up the Internet if your provider provides the Internet using PPPoE, L2TP technologies. And for most, the way out of this situation is to use a router to connect the TV to the Internet.
Setting up the Internet on the TV when connected via a router.
For this method, it is necessary that the Internet is already configured on the router (you can find how to configure the router in other articles on our website). Connect one end of the cable to any LAN port on the router.
The other end of the cable to the TV.
Go to your TV settings. On LG TVs, for this, on a conventional remote control, press the "Settings" button
or "Input" button on the remote magic
and select the gear icon.
Go to the "Network" - "Wired Ethernet" menu and make sure that "Connected to the Internet" is indicated below this inscription.
If this is not the case, check that the TV receives network settings automatically by selecting an Ethernet connection. Click the "Edit" button.
And check the "Automatic" box.
Thus, without much effort, using a LAN network cable, you can set up the Internet on any TV (LG, Philips, Samsung, Sony, etc.).
